Grove Atlantic, Inc. is a medium-sized trade book publisher consisting of five imprints, Grove Press, Atlantic Monthly Press, Atlantic Crime, Black Cat, and Roxane Gay Books. We publish literary fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and translations.

  • Editorial Assistant / Assistant Editor

    Grove Atlantic, an award-winning mid-sized independent publishing house known for quality works of adult fiction and nonfiction, is looking for an energetic and organized person to assist in our editorial team, reporting to the VP, Editorial Director.

    Key tasks include:

    -Monitoring, logging, reading and evaluating submissions, both fiction and nonfiction
    -Preparing and transmitting manuscripts to production, liaising with Production department, managing editor and author at all stages of the process, from copyediting, proofreading, 1st pass through final pass
    -Reviewing and carefully checking covers and other material in order to minimize errors
    -Drafting descriptive copy for hardcovers and paperback reissues, catalogue, galleys / ARCs, rights list, and getting needed approvals from author/agent, and updating copy at later stages of the publication process
    -Preparing tip sheets and sales conference / presentation materials, including suggesting comp titles, marketing bullets, keywords, BISACs
    -Creating cover worksheets for art and long descriptions for sales for titles
    -Drafting contract proposals, deal memos, and check requests, and keeping on top of contractual payments due
    -Pulling review quotes from weekly circ, and updating blurbs, review pulls, and awards in sales database CoreSource and on the Grove website
    -Active participation in weekly marketing, editorial, and production meetings
    -Assisting authors in obtaining print reprint permissions
    -Keeping track of galley/book orders and mailings to authors/agents, for blurbs or finished copy buzz mailings, and to office
    -Some clerical work including filling out transmittal forms, printing editorial materials, mailing, photocopying, messengering, and keeping contacts up to date
    -Soliciting and editing Reading Group Guides each season
    -Assisting in scheduling and itinerary planning for literary conferences such as the London Book Fair
    -Occasionally creating social media posts

    Essential Skills:

    – Excellent organizational skills and ability to juggle different tasks, prioritize, and stay on top of deadlines
    – Keen attention to detail, strong proofreading and writing skills
    – Excellent communication skills, both verbal & written, and strong interpersonal skills, as the job requires liaising within Grove, as well as with authors, agents, and other industry professionals
    – Bachelor’s Degree and publishing Internship a minimum. For Assistant Editor role, 2+ years of publishing experience expected
    -Strong interest in literary fiction and narrative nonfiction with an interest in the publishing market and the business of books

    The ideal candidate will be widely read, passionate and engaged, unflappable and with excellent organizational and communication skills. Ideally, the role will be one in which the right person will grow and expand their skillset and take on more advanced duties, including editing support. To start, a strong ability to evaluate submissions thoroughly and quickly is a must.

    This job is based in New York City and 4 days in the office are expected.

    Salary: $40,000+

    Benefits include paid vacation, holidays, and sick leave, as well as health and dental coverage and 401k. Applicants must have the ability to work in the United States.

  • Internships

    Grove Atlantic, Inc. is a medium-sized trade book publisher consisting of five imprints, Grove Press, Atlantic Monthly Press, Atlantic Crime, Black Cat and Roxane Gay Books. We publish literary fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and translations.

    We are pleased to offer internships to aspiring publishing professionals who wish to learn more about the industry and explore an area of interest in either editorial, subsidiary rights, or sales, marketing, and publicity. Internships are organized on a seasonal basis  as outlined below. Internship openings with up-to-date requirements and deadlines will be posted 2-3 months prior to the listed start date. However, candidates are welcome to submit their resume and cover letter at any time throughout the year, and their application will be kept on file for the next internship recruitment cycle.

    • Fall: September—December

    • Winter: January—May

    • Summer: May—August
